The Council of the European Union adopted, on Monday, in the end, the new Community legislation introducing ceilings on rates of use of credit and debit cards in payment transactions.

The maximum ceilings, which had already been approved by the European Parliament last March and are now definitely adopted by the Member States, are set at 0.2% of the transaction amount to be paid by merchants to banks for the use of debit cards and 0 3% for credit cards.
